Whatever the actual figure is or however little you care about animal cruelty, it is true; some UK tax payer’s money really does subsidise rearing bulls for the ring. The EU will tell you that they have passed rule saying no money should go to ring-bull farmers. They have but they can’t implement it without breaking their other rules so it is not enforceable. This is how it goes: Bulls are reared on farmland. Farmers get payments based on the land they farm not what they farm on that land. This is due to the reforms made to the CAP to avoid the butter mountains and wine lakes. Obviously it’s not a deal breaker but it makes me weep none the less.
