“Over 3 million UK jobs are linked to exports to the EU” Government EU leaflet.
Depends what you mean by linked. This is an estimate of the number of jobs directly involved in companies exporting to the EU, plus the number of jobs in their suppliers that depend on their business, and so are indirectly linked to exports to the EU. At least that is what I thought it was. I recently herd that they actually arrived at 3 mill by taking the estimated percentage of the economy involved with the EU and took that percentage of all the jobs. Quite a leap it could be miles out. Shall we just say lots of jobs.
But also it doesn’t tell us anything about the number of jobs linked to membership of the EU.
The other explanation of this I’ve seen is that this calculation goes back to the year 2000, and reports from Southbank University and the National Institute of Economic and Social Research.
NIESR’s report explicitly said: “there is no a priori reason to suppose that many of these [jobs], if any, would be lost permanently if Britain were to leave the EU.”
So a pinch of salt is needed here. Maldon Salt where I come from is best, you can get it in Waitrose. Some jobs might be lost but nothing like 3 million. No reason for complete panic unless you are an MEP of course that job would be gone for sure.
